Examine external ear canal with a good torch for wax, white flakes or boil. Palpate the mastoid process for tenderness. Inspect Tonsils, Throat and teeth for referred pain. If wax, Soliwax ear drops 3 times/ day x 3 days or Glycirine sodabicarb drops (to soften the wax) Then clear the canal using Johnson’s ear buds or Refer to ENT surgeon for ear wash. If fungal infection i.e white flakes or black spots. Clean the ear with earbuds or cotton sticks and CANDID ear drops x tds (Clortrimaxole ) or Hamycin drops x tds till lesions Never put gential violet Mervurochrome in ear. If furuncle or boil in external ear canal Cap. Bacilox 500mg tds x 5 Tab. Combiflam 1tds x 3 Otogesic ear drops tds If associated with fever or mastoid tenderness Inj. Pencilin 10 lacs IM x ATD x 12 hourly Cap. NUFEX 500mg Qid. Tab. Ibuflammar.P 1 tds Cap. Proxyvon 1 tds. If external ear looks normal, ear pain is due to otitis media: Inj. Cefentral 500mg IM 12 hourly Tab. Combiflam 1 tds Tab. Bidazen 1 tds. Otrivin nasal drops tds to keep Eustachian tubes open. If in a painful ear, external ear is normal put drops in the nose.
